First-year resident narrowly evades theft of $50 bike with $60 D-lock
A first-year resident at Burgmann college has been spotted securing a 2008 Progear to a rack outside the ANU Law Library yesterday afternoon. Sources confirm that the locking device, which he produced from a 20L Osprey pack, was similar to the model offered at the Cycle Shed in the Pop-Up village.
“Yeah, better to splash out on a bit of security than a whole new bike, hey,” he told reporters, explaining his forward-thinking decision against the classic combination cable lock. “My cousin had someone cut his lock off outside Chifley library like, a year ago.”
Despite his admirable efforts, the student, 19, remains aware of the risks that he faces as an on-campus cyclist. “I mean, even the D-lock isn’t the perfect option. Ideally, I should be putting the old girl in a bike shed. People just take the wheels right off, you know. Like, to sell.”
He made no further comment, citing an important Torts lecture before mounting the bike and leaving.
The young man was later sighted debuting a groundbreaking new cycling technique on Daley Road, briefly releasing the handlebars to free his hands for the journey between Ursula Hall and John’s college. According to several eyewitnesses, the student employed this upper-body mobility to remove his helmet while in transit, shaving valuable time off his return to the Burgmann dining hall.
